Our Progress With Making Schools Menstrual Friendly

The next phase of this program under the Milaan Outreach Program is multifaceted.
The targeted geography will be in Sittapur, Uttar Pradesh and will take place over
the duration of three years. There will be 69 schools and their associated villages
involved in this program, with a target number of 5,175 children, including boys and girls.

In these 69 schools, the following will be assessed: infrastructure; knowledge,
attitudes and practices of adolescent girls towards menstruation and menstrual
hygiene management; and the role of boys and teachers in regards to providing a
gender friendly space in society. Workshops for both boys and girls will be
implemented to educate and enable the children on menstruation, with focus on
three major aspects: puberty and biology of menstruation; menstrual management;
and the social positioning of menstruation. The workshops will be conducted in two,
ten hour modules.

The next aspect of this program will incorporate capacity building workshops in 70
villages, for groups of 50 adolescent girls at a time. In these workshops, these girls
will be educated regarding the three major areas listed above in six hour sessions.
The targeted number of girls for this aspect of the program is 3,500 over three years.

Lastly, Milaan will also be incorporating community outreach and menstrual
hygiene education via their Girl Icon Fellowship program. The Girl Icon Fellowship
program is a two year leadership development program for adolescent girls (aged
12-18 years old) who have demonstrated the willingness and ability to challenge
social barriers that restrict the unleashing of girls’ potential in their communities.
Every Girl Icon Fellow forms a group of 20 girls to design, develop and implement
an action project in their community. Under this program, the goal will be to
implement 100 social action projects focused on creating awareness among
adolescent girls to be able to manage menstruation hygienically and with dignity.
Each social action project will target at least 50 girls and women in each target
village, with a total of 5,000 girls and women to be reached over three years.
We at Ayati are excited to be such an integral part of this progessive program as it
moves forward. The ability to make such a broad impact will have continuing effects
on the villages involved and will invoke change for the generations to come.
