MHM in action in day School
While visiting Lucknow, we were fortunate enough to visit a government school at which our menstrual health management workshop was held earlier this year. To our pleasant surprise, this packed class of 9th through 12th grade girls was able to recall being educated on the physiology, management and taboos regarding menstruation. Despite the fact that these girls were already experiencing their periods, they had unfortunately never learned about menstruation prior to our workshops, neither in school nor by their families.

Partnership & Progress
AYATI has partnered with Milaan’s Making Schools Friendly and Girl Icon programs over the past 2 years. These programs involve KAP studies (which assess Knowledge, Aptitude and Practices) and subsequent workshops. These workshops are taking place in Sittapur, Uttar Pradesh, where the female literacy rate is only 44%. To date, 20 schools have participated in the programs, impacting 1000 students.
Our Progress With Making Schools Menstrual Friendly
The next phase of this program under the Milaan Outreach Program is multifaceted.
The targeted geography will be in Sittapur, Uttar Pradesh and will take place over
the duration of three years. There will be 69 schools and their associated villages
involved in this program, with a target number of 5,175 children, including boys and girls.

The Making Schools Menstrual Friendly Program
Because menstruation and menstrual management are topics largely ignored in society, few people actually raise their voice or mobilize people and resources to make facilities such as schools menstrual friendly. The few individuals and private and public institutions that realize the problem and want to improve conditions do not know of the tangible and impactful actions they can take to improve the menstrual friendliness of schools.
